Let's begin with defining porosity which is the ability of liquid or air to be able to pass through or penetrate. Here lately, we've been hearing the term hair porosity a lot but do you know what it means when someone says I have low or high porosity? Think of porosity as the behavior of your hair. Knowing how your hair behaves influences the particular products that we use.
You can determine your hair's porosity by conducting a simple test. By placing a strand or two in a container of water and monitoring it's behavior you will be able to solve the mystery. If the strand sinks to the bottom, it is considered to be high, if it descends to the middle it is considered to be medium, if it does neither and floats it is considered to be low.
High porosity usually means that your hair is damaged, be it from chemicals, coloring or heat. This also means that your hair is not maintaining the moisture that its getting and does not hold a style long.
Medium is considered to be the perfect balance and can hold moisture for longer periods of time. Products that are left in the hair have a tendency to absorb well such as leave in conditioners and heat protectants.
Low porosity means that products are not being absorbed and hair appears weighed down. This is because the cuticle of the hair is closed and product have a tendency to sit on top of the hair. Steam treatments are good for this hair type as it opens the cuticle also a deep moisturizing shampoo and conditioner is ideal for this hair type.
Now that we have covered the different porosities, hopefully this will allow you select the right products for your hair type to assist you on your hair journey.
